Alamance Battleground On this site in 1771, an armed rebellion of backcountry farmers, called Regulators, battled against royal governor William Tryon's militia. Visitors can tour the eighteenth-century Allen House and battlefield monuments.

Averasboro Battlefield & Museum The Battle of Averasboro (also called Averysborough, Smith's Mill and Black River) was the first deliberate, tactical resistance to the infamous march of Federal forces through Georgia and the Carolinas. The battle was fought on the plantation lands of the John Smith family four miles south of the Cape Fear River village of Averasboro.

Aycock Birthplace Charles B. Aycock was born into a simple, rural home in 1859. In 1900 he was elected governor and dedicated his life to improving public education in North Carolina.

Barker House The Barker House, was built in 1782 as the residence of Thomas & Penelope Barker. Penelope Barker was a principle figure in the famous Edenton Tea Party which occurred on October 25, 1774.

Bath European settlement near the Pamlico River in the 1690s led to the creation of Bath, North Carolina's first town, in 1705. The town's location seemed ideal with easy access to the river and the Atlantic Ocean 50 miles away at Ocracoke Inlet.

Bennett Place This simple farmhouse was situated between Confederate General Johnston's headquarters in Greensboro and Union General Sherman's headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1865 the two soldiers met at the Bennett Place, where they signed surrender papers for Confederate armies.

Bentonville Battlefield The Battle of Bentonville was the last full-scale action of the Civil War in which a Confederate army was able to mount a tactical offensive. This major battle, the largest ever fought in North Carolina, was the only significant attempt to defeat the large Union army of Gen. William T. Sherman.

Brunswick / Fort Anderson A major pre-Revolutionary port on North Carolina's Cape Fear River, Brunswick was razed by British troops in 1776 and never rebuilt. During the Civil War, Fort Anderson was constructed atop the old village site.

House in the Horseshoe In the summer and spring, bright flowers surround this white plantation house whose name comes from its location on a horseshoe bend in the Deep River. The house, c.1770, was owned by Philip Alston, whose band of whigs was attacked in 1781 by tories led by David Fanning.

Hugh Torance House Hugh Torance began running a peddler business while in Rowan County, which he continued for a good part of his life. It is not known if he or the former owner, John McDowell, built the first log structure on the property but to this two room cabin Hugh Torance added a two story Federal addition.
